Hazel Dell Brewpub
(short notes)

Vancouver, Washington

All beers sampled at the brewpub in July 1995.

Golden Ale American Pale Ale * * *
Indeed golden. Some diacetyl in nose and flavor. Slight maltiness. I would guess the water was treated with gypsum -- it was somewhat chalky. OG 1.044, crystal clear (unlike every other beer here) fairly clean, with some flavor. Good for what it is.

Red Zone Pale Ale American Amber Ale * * 1/2
OG 1.050. Amber color. More hop character than the Golden. Unfortunately, not enough malty balance or crystal note for an Amber Ale. Somewhat insipid.

Black Cannon Porter Brown Porter * * * 1/2
I judged it as a brown porter, and it was a fairly good version of that style. Nice chocolate notes, deep brown in color, somewhat cloudy, and slightly out of balance to the bittering hop.

Captain Moran's Irish Stout Irish Stout * * *
1.064 OG. Deep brown; not black opaque as a stout should be. The OG is a tad high for an Irish Stout, and is more consistent with an Export stout. Good roasty profile, hops and malt in balance.

Steinweizen: no rating.
Berry Weizen: no rating.
Stone Berry: no rating.

I didn't take notes on these beers: they frankly were not interesting. I gather that different berries were used in the two berry beers, although I couldn't tell the difference. What I could tell, however, is that the Berry Weizen was suffering from a sharp lactobacillus infection.
