Mort Subite
(short notes)

Brussels, Belgium

All beers reviewed were sampled at the Mort Subite brown cafe in Brussels

December 12, 1998

Kriek Kriek Lambic
On tap, no less.  Deep red, pink head with excellent head retention.  Hints of sourness and cheese in aroma, followed by a sweetness.  Very thin body, but not gassy.  The only flavor present is a soda-poppy cherry flavor, but the beer does finish with a mild sourness.

Faro Faro Lambic
For 75 BEF, you too can have authentic Faro.  Hints of brett in the aroma, with sweetness from the sugar and an acidity also present.  While Drie Fonteinen certainly has a better version, the Mort Subite offering is not the sweet, boring Faro commonly available.  A very nice, complex find.

Gueuze Gueuze Lambic
Clear horsy notes dominate the aroma.  This beer was served in a large goblet at Mort Subite.  Light head and good lacework.  There is not a lot of complexity in the flavor profile, this beer is a one trick acidic pony.  The lactic finish lingers.  Again, there are better examples of the style, but this is more interesting than the version available in the US.  At a Brussels restaurant later that evening, the lone interesting beer was Mort Subite Gueuze.  Based on the promise from the afternoon, I ordered one, and it was not nearly as acidic as the version at the cafe.  This rendered the beer boring.
